Quick answer

US proxy vs VPN: which do I need?

US proxy vs VPN: a VPN encrypts all of a device's traffic and sends it through the VPN company's server. A US proxy sends only the apps you set through a home or carrier IP, chosen by state, city or ZIP. Lodestate sells US residential proxies from $0.52/GB (November 2026). No KYC. Pay in crypto.

How does a US proxy compare with a VPN?

A residential proxy, a mobile proxy port and a typical commercial VPN, point by point.

What is the difference between a US proxy and a VPN?

A VPN is an encrypted tunnel for a whole device; a proxy is a relay for the apps you choose. The VPN client runs at system level and captures every connection. A proxy is set inside a browser, a script or a tool, as a host, a port and a login.

A US residential proxy gives each request the IP of a US household, picked by state, city or ZIP code. A VPN gives you the IP of its server. At Lodestate, a proxy connection uses gw.lodestate.com on port 7777 for HTTP or 7778 for SOCKS5. The full walkthrough is in how to set up a US proxy.

Which gives a more realistic US IP for local results?

A residential or mobile proxy does. Websites read the network behind an IP. A home ISP or a carrier looks like a local user; a data center network looks like a server. Learn what a US residential proxy is if the term is new.

Location depth matters too. A VPN server labelled "Chicago" gives one city at best, and local search results, store prices and ads change by ZIP code. Proxyway's 2026 market research found ZIP targeting at only 5 of 13 proxy providers. Lodestate covers all 50 US states and Washington, D.C. with ZIP and ASN targeting. When is a VPN the better choice?

A VPN is the right tool when you want to protect a whole device, not to look local. Pick a VPN for these jobs:

  • Public Wi-Fi: the tunnel encrypts every app between your device and the VPN server.
  • Remote access: many companies use a VPN to reach their internal network.
  • One flat price: a subscription covers all traffic, with no per-GB meter.

For US targeting by ZIP code, carrier IPs or many IPs per hour, a proxy fits better. The two products solve different problems.

Can I use a proxy and a VPN together?

Yes. Keep the VPN on the device and set the proxy inside the browser or tool that needs a US IP. The proxy then sees the VPN server as your source address.

That changes how you sign in. An IP allowlist must contain the VPN's exit IP, which changes when you switch servers. Signing in with a username and password avoids the problem, and Lodestate offers both methods on every plan.

How does US proxy pricing compare with a VPN subscription?

A VPN bills a flat subscription; a proxy bills the traffic or the time you use. Residential traffic at Lodestate starts at $1.50 for 1 GB. Prepaid residential and rotating-mobile traffic never expires: unused GB stay on your account until you use them.

A dedicated port is the closest match to a flat VPN plan: one IP and unlimited data under fair use for a fixed term. By Lodestate's own price list, a 30-day port at $45 costs 60% less per day than the 1-day port at $3.75. Every tier is on how much a US proxy costs.

What else do buyers ask about proxies and VPNs?

Is a US proxy safer than a VPN?

On untrusted Wi-Fi, a VPN is safer, because it encrypts all device traffic. A proxy adds no encryption of its own, but HTTPS sites stay encrypted end to end through it.

Does a US proxy replace my real IP on websites?

Yes, for the apps that use it: websites see the proxy's exit IP instead of yours. Apps outside the proxy settings still use your own connection.

Is a VPN enough for local SEO checks?

Not for ZIP-level work. A VPN offers one server IP per city at most, while local rankings change by ZIP code. A residential proxy with ZIP targeting shows what a local user sees.

Should I pick a residential or a mobile US proxy?

Residential fits volume work by state, city or ZIP. A mobile port fits app tests and account work on one carrier IP: see residential vs mobile proxies.

Do I need KYC to buy a US proxy?

Not at Lodestate: no ID, no selfie, no documents. You top up from $25 in BTC, USDT, USDC, ETH, SOL, LTC.
