When should I target a city rather than a state or a ZIP code?
Target a city when a website changes its answer from one metro to the next but not inside the metro. A local search for a plumber or a dentist is the classic case. A city filter sits between a state and a ZIP code: tight enough for local results, broad enough to keep plenty of IPs online. Segments follow the order of USERNAME-country-{cc}-state-{state}-city-{city}-zip-{zip}-asn-{asn}-session-{id}-ttl-{minutes}.
Which targeting level fits which US job?
| Level | Username segment | Example | Fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| State | state-ga | All of Georgia | Statewide prices, testing a site state by state |
| City | state-ga-city-atlanta | Atlanta | Local search for a city, ad checks in one metro |
| ZIP code | zip-30305 | Buckhead, Atlanta | Store-level prices, map packs by neighborhood |
| ASN | asn-7922 | Comcast home lines | One ISP's view of a page |
Why is a city filter narrower than its metro area?
A city filter covers one city, while its metro area spreads across dozens of separate towns. Miami had 0.49 million residents in 2025 and its metro area 6.4 million, a ratio of 13 to 1 (Census Bureau). Atlanta's ratio was 12 to 1 and Washington's 9 to 1.
Suburbs carry their own names in geolocation data, so a Miami filter does not reach Fort Lauderdale or West Palm Beach. For a metro-wide view, run several city filters or use the state filter.
Two pairs of pages share one media market. Dallas and Fort Worth both sit in DMA #4, and San Francisco and San Jose in DMA #9. An ad check for either market can start from one city of the pair.
Does city targeting work outside the 30 listed cities?
Yes. The city- segment works for other US cities too; the 30 pages are guides, not limits. Results depend on how many home connections are online in that place, so a small town returns fewer exits than a large metro. When too few IPs answer, widen the filter to the state. All 51 state codes are under which US states can I target with residential proxies.
What do teams check from a city-level US IP?
Teams use city-level US IPs to read what one city sees, ZIP code by ZIP code. Three examples from our city pages:
- Local SEO: compare Seattle map packs from 98101 (Downtown) and 98107 (Ballard).
- Retail prices: read one chain's public prices in Denver's 80202 (LoDo) and 80206 (Cherry Creek).
- Ad checks: confirm which creative runs in the Boston DMA, from 02116 (Back Bay) and 02127 (South Boston).
The tools for each job are compared in which US proxies are best for local SEO and which US proxies are best for price monitoring. ZIP syntax is covered in what is ZIP code proxy targeting.
What else do buyers ask about US city proxies?
Does city targeting cost extra?
No. Lodestate charges the same for one city as for the whole country. Traffic costs $1.50 for 1 GB, $0.75/GB from 5 to 100 GB and $0.52/GB at 1 TB. All tiers are on how much do US residential proxies cost.
How do I target one neighborhood of a large US city?
Use its ZIP code. For example, zip-11211 points at Williamsburg in Brooklyn and zip-90291 at Venice in Los Angeles. Each city page lists more ZIP codes with their neighborhoods.
How long can I keep one city IP?
Up to the sticky limit: up to 30 minutes, set per session with the ttl parameter; the IP can change earlier. Add session- and ttl- to the username, as in state-co-city-denver-session-a7-ttl-25.
Why does a small US city return few IPs?
A small city has fewer home connections online at any moment, so fewer exits answer the filter. Widen to the state, or pick the nearest large city with its own page.
Is there an ID check for city-level US proxies?
No. Lodestate runs no identity check: no ID, no selfie, no documents. You fund the account in BTC, USDT, USDC, ETH, SOL, LTC, from $25.
Which US city do you need to see?
One plan covers every US city and ZIP code, from $0.52/GB. No KYC: no ID, no selfie, no documents. Pay in crypto.
